20's Fads and Fashions

The 1920’s clothes were much different than the clothes of today.  People wore hats which were called flappers. The women usually wore skirts and dresses, and were rarely seen in pants.  They were also seen wearing hats called "cloches," and wore scarves around their neck.
Women wore many different styles of skirts. Skirts were made out of wool, silk, linen, and cotton. They put many different designs on their skirts such as candy, flowers, and even feathers.
A twenties couple enjoyed dressing in evening attire.  Women wore dresses that stopped at her knees and had no waist line.  This statement was called the "Flapper" look.  As you can see in the picture below, men's fashion has not changed much through the decades.

The men on the other hand did not have clothes that were as fashionable as the women. The men that worked in the coal mine usually wore an old pair of overalls and one of their old shirts because their clothes got very dirty.  It was hard to find any of these men in nice clothes. Other men worked in the fields and wore clothes like a pair of overalls and T-shirts.  However, they rarely wore a shirt at all  in the summer because of the hot sun and heat.
In the 1920's, almost all of the men worked unless they were ill or had just lost their wife. The wife usually did not work. In that case, the women and the men could rarely afford new clothes.  Most of their money simply went to putting food on the table and living conditions.  This as you can see, is not the same as today's lifestyle.
A fad of the 1920's were the Mahjong.  The Mahjong was a Chinese game. It came out in 1922. By 1923, they were selling better than the radio.
