One of the biggest events in the 1920's was the prohibition of alcohol.
This prohibition was when alcohol was not to be sold or drank by anyone.
Some people did not agree with the were addicted to alcohol, so they
started making places called "sneakeasies". Many people started going to
these places to drink without any police knowing. Many got away with
it, but others were caught and everybody there was arrested. However, many
people still took the risks on going to the secret place. In about 1928,
there were more than 1,000 sneakeasies in New York city alone. Now, no
one needs to have sneakeasies, because the government gave up and now we
are allowed to drink alcohol beginning at the age of 21.
Also in the 20's, the first TransAtlantic solo flight, which was flown by Charles A. Lindbergh, was achieved. This was the first successful solo flight across the Atlantic Ocean. Charlie's Lindbergh's first solo transAtlantic flight in 1927 made history. Two and a half years later, the world was stunned by the kidnap and murder of his infant son. In 1936, he saw over Hitler's threat and warned America to arm itself from this man. He flew 50 combat missions for the U.S. over the Pacific Ocean and wrote five books about it before he died. In 1929, the Stock Market crashed, causing the ten year Great Depression. Businesses shut down, leaving people unemployed and homeless. To learn more about the Great Depression check out the 1930's events. Also in 1920, Austria became a democratic country, meaning the country was ran by the people. Austria is located Eastern Europe. Finally, John Galsworthy, a poet, won a Noble Prize for literature. |
