1910's   Events
1910-1919

One of the biggest events of the 1910's may come as a big surprise to you.  The unsinkable (supposedly) ship, the Titanic, sank!  The Titanic was the most luxurious ocean liners of it's time.  It was believed to be the safest ship afloat.  However, at about 11:40 p.m., on April 14, 1912, during the vessels first trip across the Atlantic, it struck an iceberg. When the ship hit the iceberg, sea waters flooded the ship and the stern went down first.  Next, the ship broke in half, bobbed, then went straight down to be lost on the bottom of the ocean forever.  After two and a half hours, the entire ship sank.  The shocking event killed 1,517 people and only 705 people survived that scary night!

World War I was the bloodiest war to that point in history.  Americans were still on the sidelines of WWI, when the Germans torpedoed a British ship, the Lusitainia.  The torpedo killed 128 Americans that were on board.  This stirred up harsh feelings toward the Germans.  Three million soldiers were drafted and a million more volunteered for military services.  Of the four million, two million served overseas.
Some of the main weapons that were used at the front were machine guns, artillery shells, and tanks.  For personal use on the field, each soldier was equipped with a rifle, grenades, and clubs and knives.  This helped the soldier protect himself.  The grenades were used to knock out enemies close to their quarters.   Sometimes, the troops were  in the trenches for hours, waiting for action, or waiting for death.  An estimated ten million soldiers died on the battlefields of Europe during the war.  American losses were about 112,000 dead and 200,000 injured. On November 11, 1918, at 5:00 a.m., Germany signed on the Armistice (cease fire).  Six hours later, on the "eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month," World War I was finished!  This is why we celebrate Veteran's Day every November 11th, to honor these brave soldiers.
