  • Dancer Isadora Duncan performs for her first time in England.

1902

  • In football, the first Tournament of Roses was held in Pasadena, California. Michigan defeated Stanford, 49-0.  This begins the Rose Bowl.

1903

  • Beginning a new era in baseball, the Boston Red Sox won the first World Series, beating the Pittsburgh Pirates.

  • Jack London published The Call of the Wild, a book still enjoyed today.

  • The Great Train Robbery was filmed being the first movie to cleverly link one scene to another, leading to a climax. G. M. Anderson, an unsuccessful actor, became famous starring in it. He starred in 400 movies in his career.

1905

  • In Pittsburgh, the first Nickelodeon ( a mini movie theater) opened, showing early movies.

  • Fauvism, named for its use of bright colors and bold brushwork, evolves in Paris. Participants include Henri Matisse, George Braque, and Raoul Dufy.

  • An expressionist movement in painting called Die Brucke (The Bridge) emerges in Dresden, Germany. Influenced by Van Gogh, the work appeared intense, expressionistic, and primitive. Ernst Ludwig Kirchner was a leader in the group.

1907

  • The first exhibition of cubist paintings was held in Paris. Picasso painted Les Demoiselles d'Avignon.
