Market days were practically the only chance to buy goods from foreign countries. They were held once or twice a year. At a market day, you could get a chance to buy fine spiced wine from France. Men gawked at the intricately decorated swords and daggers from Germany. There were finely woven cloth from England and Flanders. Elegant gloves were made by talented leather workers in Spain. People stared in amazement at the magnificent silks, satins, and brocades from Italy and China.
But there wasn't just haggling going on. Great entertainment such as dancing bears, musicians and jugglers were only a penny away.
It was also a place to see friends, relatives, and to gossip.
