Back in the Middle Ages, the people lived in wooden houses. The houses where not very big. The  houses were only so small that it only has one or two bedroom in a house. As a matter of fact, the houses where only about three feet wide. Since their houses were made out of wood fire was a dangers way of keeping warm.  They had so much difficulty finding accessories. People slept on benches and mattresses. Instead of rugs on the floor today, back then they used herbs so they would not have to step on the dirty floor.

A lot of rats lived in these homes.  The rats carried diseases which made the people that lived in the houses very, very sick and there is a possibility that that person could die.  From 1347 to 1351 a terrible disease killed 75,000,000 people in Europe and Asia. It was called the plague because so many people died.  A nickname for the plague is the Black Death.

The patients believed in superstitions that  would tell them if they where going to live or die. They would add up all the persons' letters in his name. If the total in the persons name was odd then the patient was going to die if the numbers of the person was an even number, then they thought  that that person would stay alive and live a happy life. But if the person dies, the doctors said that the patients would not go to hell.

Poor people could not afford to buy any medicines so they would have to make them. To make headaches go away, they used a soaked cloth and they would put the cloth in the bowl of peony root and rose oil, and placed the cloth on the persons forehead. Another medicine was made up of chopped up beetles mixed with fat. Most of these "cures" were harmless, but it helped patients survive.
