In the Middle Ages the houses were crowded into narrow streets. In 1419 the houses were built at least nine feet tall. Back then when a person built a home or a house they would get a penny.
In the streets where people use to walk there were not any side walks to walk on. The streets down below were like a dumpster. Also the rivers where their drinking water came from was also full of trash. Gutters in the middle of the street drained water.
The towns were usually very, very small. The bigger ones usually had about 2,000 people. But in the 1300's, the town of London had about 80,000 people. Each house had its own garden where people could grow crops. Most houses had dirt floors. They were usually made of wood. Stone was hard to find, so it was almost always used for castles, walls, other kinds of defenses, and other important buildings. Only in areas where there was plentiful stone were houses made of stone. On the inside there was usually just a few objects. Furniture consisted of several stools and a table. Windows were not made of glass, they were just open holes in the sides of walls. Most of the day was spent working, so there was not much time for leisure.
