The selling of goods was closely related with market days. On market days, vendors opened up stalls to sell their goods in a market square. Their were also shops with unique signs on them. Since most people could not read in the Middle Ages, symbols were hung outside shops. A horse shoe would mean a farrier. A green bush was the symbol for an inn.
There were many kinds of craftsmen. Blacksmith's made almost anything made of metal except weapons. Craftsmen made candles and bowls. Wheelwrights created the wooden part of wheels. To finish it off, a blacksmith would add a metal hoop. Coopers crafted barrels and so on. Expensive luxury items were brought by merchants. These merchants would only come once or twice a year.
