Callisto was discovered by Simon Marius and Galileo Galilei in 1610 Callisto is the second largest moon of Jupiter. It is the 3rd largest moon in our Solar System. It's just about the size of Mercury. It's crust is ancient, and it's rings extend out to about 3,000 kilometers in diameter. It has a bright central region that is 600 kilometers in diameter. Callisto's crust is probably 200 kilometers thick and meteorites have punctured holes in Callisto's crust, causing water to spread over the surface and forming bright rays and rings around the crater. Callisto has no known atmosphere. |
