Ships

All kinds of ships were used during WWII. Some of the ships used were called cruisers, aircraft carriers, destroyers, frigates, minesweepers and PT boats.

Aircraft carriers do not have many weapons on board.  Airplanes took off and landed on these ships.

Cruisers protected aircraft carriers from submarines and airplanes.

Submarines are underwater boats.  The submarines found enemy submarines and destroyed them.

A destroyer is a light ship that goes fast.  It destroyed submarines and planes in the sky.

A frigate escorts other ships.  It is not as heavy as a destroyer.

Minesweepers found underwater mines and destroyed them so other ships could pass through safely.

PT boats were smaller boats used in waterways.  They shot torpedoes that could not go very far.
