South Carolina was founded on May 23, 1788. South Carolina was the eighth state to join the United States of America. The state capital is Columbia.

 

The symbol on the quarter is a Palmetto tree, the Carolina Wren and the Yellow Jessamine, all symbols of South Carolina The figures are surrounded by the South Carolina nickname and a star showing where the capital is. The Carolina Wren represents the state bird and the state flower is the Yellow Jessamine.

 

The quarter came out on May 22, 2000.
