North Carolina was part of the United States of America on November 21, 1789. It's nickname is "The Tar Heel State."
The design on the state quarter for North Carolina is a plane. This is there because it is recognizing the first plane, named Flyer that was ever successful. This plane flew on December 17, 1903 in Kitty Hawk, North Caroloina. It traveled 120 feet.
The North Carolina State came out in 2001.
