The symbol on the quarter is the Maryland State house dome with the state nickname "The Old Line State." Also the state house has sides of oak leaf clusters. The state house is a historic building dating back to 1772 and it is the largest wooden dome built without nails. The house represents peace because it served as the nations first peacetime capital. The treaty of Paris was approved here officially ending the Revolutionary war. The oak leaf clusters are from the state tree, the White Oak. The nickname comes from its "troops of the line".
The Maryland quarter came out on March 13, 2000.
