General Longstreet (Confederate) moved back about 1 mile and advanced again through the woods so the Union lookouts would not spot him. But, when he arrived he found the Union General Sykes (who had moved up without Meade’s permission). Longstreet still attacked Sykes and Sykes was thrown all the way back to the Union line. Sykes’ mistake had been paid in blood.
Meanwhile Ewell (Confederate) had been assaulting the northern lines of the Union and had got only one brigade up during that night (which the next morning were driven down again). The fighting went on all day and night with few gains and a lot of bloodshed.
