The Story of the Battle of Bull Run by Zachary Kent contains a lot of good information about the first battle of Bull Run in Virginia. The first battle of Bull Run was fought in July 1861. It was the first major battle of the Civil War. It started when the Union army shot a cannon ball that exploded in the fireplace of the farmhouse of Wilmer McLean where the Southern headquarters was set up. The book describes the first battle and how the South won, surprising the Northern troops. Men and women who had brought picnics to watch the battle and expected a quick Union victory were swept up in the retreat and added to the confusion. After the victory, the South believed they would soon win, but a long war was ahead. At the end of the book, Zachary Kent gives another interesting fact. A second battle of Bull Run was fought a year later, again on the land of Wilmer McLean. After the second battle, McLean decided to move to find peace. When the Civil War ended in 1865, the South surrendered at a house in Appomattox, Virginia. It was the house Wilmer McLean had moved to when he left Bull Run! I enjoyed this book and I think it is a good book for people interested in the first battle of the Civil War.

Conditions endured by captured Union army soldiers
Andersonville was a 16-1/2 acre plot of ground surrounded by a 12 foot stockade fence. It was built in Georgia especially to house Union army prisoners of war. The South was very low on supplies for their own military forces, so they were unable to provide for the prisoners. Andersonville in the summer was extremely hot and in the winter the small tents and lack of warm clothing and blankets caused many deaths. Of the 30,000 prisoners, 12,000 died before the war ended.

I guess you cannot call this a definate read because it is just a picture book. The picture are great. I especially liked the pictures about the battles and the weapons. There is a great section on soldier boys with pictures of children.
