Rights to a Show
Did you know ......?
Anyone, including international companies, schools, not-for profit,
etc, that wants to produce a production must contact the appropriate
agency and request the rights.
They will be charged a fee based on the number of performances,
capacity of the theatre, and the organization. Large productions
such as Broadway and tours (Big League included) can request exclusive
rights so that no one else can produce a production. The agency
will then run all other requests by the production comp
any,
who then has the right to refuse the rights to the other group.
There are several agencies that hold the rights to shows. These
are:
Music Theatre International
Samuel French Inc
Tams-Whitmark Music Library
The Rodgers and Hammerstein Theater Library (R&H holds the
rights to several shows besides R&H- for instance, Footloose).
