Wen as Lady Thiang

Wen Zhang is a native of China, born in Nanjing, located north of Shanghai. She began her musical career in southern China after she graduated from Nanjing Institute of Arts. She received a scholarship from The University of Western Ontario to continue her graduate study in Canada. Wen has her master's degree from the University of Western Ontario and has performed in many operas as a Mezzo Soprano. She has sung Suzuki in Madama Butterfly with the New Jersey Association of Verismo Opera, Nutmeg Opera in Connecticut and the Toronto Opera Repertoire. She also performed Cherubino in Le Nozze di Figaro, Dame Quickly in Falstaff and Maddalena in Rigoletto.

As a child, Wen did not aspire to be a singer or an actress. She in fact, had been embarrassed by her deep voice, believing it sounded like a 'boy's voice'. At the age of 16, Wen was working as a train announcer when she was approached by someone who told her that she should be a singer. Hence, she began her career as an opera singer.

Wen made her musical debut in Big League Theatrical's production of Rogers and Hammerstein's The King and I. She toured from July 1998 until June 2000, performing the role of the King's head wife, Lady Thiang, in over 450 performances.
