Vassal: A person who holds land in return for promising to serve a king or baron.

Vellum: A very fine kind of parchment made from calfskin.

Vow: A promise made by a monk to observe poverty chastity and obedience.

Villein: The wealthiest class of peasant. They usually cultivate 20-40 acres of land, often in isolated strips.

Virgate: One quarter of a hide.

Wall Walk: The area along the tops of the walls from which soldiers could defend the castle. Also called an allure.

Ward: Courtyard of castle.

Well: A source of drinking

Winch: A mechanism that lifts or pulls by turning a crank and coiling a rope or cable around a drum.

Written evidence: a description of a person place or thing written by someone who lived at the time.

 

Y

 

Yeoman: an enlisted person in the U.S. navy who’s duties are chiefly clerical.
