The Manor

The manors were pieces of land that the King owned.  The Barons would split the land so the peasants could farm it.  The fields would provide materials so the peasants could  make their own foods, such as cheese, bread, and butter.  The only things they were not able to make were meat, salt, sugar and spices.  The peasants would also make their clothes by weaving wool in looms.

There were different kinds of fields.  The closest field to the castle contained barley, oats or rye.  The others had great grazing grounds for sheep, cows, goats, and horses.

Near the manor was a knight's house made of stone. The kings' stables, falcon mews and the dogs' kennel were near the knights' house. The knights were richer than most noblemen and had salt, sugar and spices to season their foods.

Farmers would live in huts made of straw and sticks, which would be located in the village near the castle. During the day the children would check on the animals. This was hard because the animals needed enough food for the night.

The millers would work in the mills to grind up grain into flour and cornmeal. After the millers would finish their daily work the lords would pay them a fee. Everyone who used the mill had to pay the lord with a portion of his crop.

The serfs raised all the food and goods for the lord and his family and his friends. Serfs also grew grain and vegetables that were needed to feed the people of the town and of the castle, but most important the animals.
