A KNIGHT’S WEAPONS
Battle-axe: This was an axe with a wooden handle and a sharp curved blade at the end.
Bolt: A shaft or missile designed to be shot from a crossbow. It was usually a short, stout and blunt-headed arrow.
Bowstring: Bowstrings were made of hemp (a plant). It took a force of about 80 pounds to draw the string.
Broadsword: A sword with a broad blade for cutting and slashing rather than thrusting.
Bucklers: Small, round shields, easily carried on horseback or by foot soldiers who might have to run for their lives in a battle.
Crossbow: Crossbows were slow to reload but it fired a bolt that could pierce armor. The crossbow bolt was very dangerous.
Falchion: A curved, single edged sword and could be used to slice off an enemy’s head.
Lance: A common weapon used by a knight on horseback. They hoped to spear the enemy with the sharp lance while riding.
Longbow: Longbows were simple but effective weapons. They were made of a stave (strip) of yew-tree wood.
Mace: A spiked wooden club with a strap at the end that a knight could carry over his shoulder.
Sword: A knight’s most prized weapon. It was made of iron, with a double-edged blade. The blade had to be very sharp. The knight used this weapon to slash the enemy. Some sword handles were decorated with jewels or carvings.
War hammer: Was a weapon that could kill an enemy by a blow on the head. It was a stone head attached to a handle that could cause serious injuries to the enemy.
