UNIFORMS
AND ARMS
Knights wore armor. They wore this because they
were battered and bashed by swords, arrows, axes, long lances, and metal clubs
called maces. They had to protect
their bodies from many sharp weapons. So they made the metal for the armor tough
enough to protect themselves. They
wore different kinds of armor. Some wore chain mail, which was basically
leather, with metal links attached. Others wore plated armor. Plated armor was
metal plates that covered all body parts and was hard to move around in. The
practice of carrying personal armorial devices such as emblems, symbols
on shields and banners began during feudal times. It was necessary for a knight
to keep his face covered by the visor of his helmet to be recognized at a
distance.
Knights carried swords. They couldn't carry lances
as they were
too long, so were only used in tournaments.
