THE CODE OF CHIVALRY

Knights present an image of medieval adventure and romance.  They were part of a complicated chivalric system in which chivalry was not just a set of rules for good behavior, it was also an order of the day.

A true knight had faith and a deep love of the Christian religion.  He defended the Church and was ready to die for it. This is witnessed in his desire to join the Crusades. He loved the land of his birth and gave generously to all. His strength served to protect women and the feeble. A knight championed right against injustice and evil, and he never surrendered or flinched in the face of the enemy. In general, a knight was honorable, courteous, generous, brave, skilled in battle, respectful to women, and helpful to the weak.

A knight who was proved guilty of cowardice or other serious misconduct, was disgraced by having his sword and spurs broken.  Misconduct usually meant violations against other knights and their families.

All knights had to follow the code of chivalry. The word “chivalry” comes from the French word for knight, chevalier. A famous bishop who lived in France in the twelfth century wrote a list of qualities he thought a knight should have. These qualities are listed below.

CODE OF CHIVALRY

      1.                  Respect for the Church

2.                  Pity for the Poor

3.                  Bravery

4.                  Knights had to vow to behave with courtesy toward women

5.                  Were expected to keep their word

6.                  They had to swear to serve the lord who knighted them.
