Old Kingdom 2780-2280 B.C. Pyramid of King Djoser is Build using large stones. Great pyramid at Giza is built the largest building until modern times. First Intermediate Period 2280-2050 B.C. Government breaks down, and regional governors divide the land among them selves. King Mentuhotep reunites the country and moves the capital to Thebes Middle Kingdom 2050- 1786 B.C. The government becomes strong under the rule of King Amenemhet Second Intermediate Period 1786-1570 B.C. Western Asiatic groups gain control of Egypt. Weapons, horses, and Chariots are introduced. New Kingdom (Empire Period) 1570-1085 B.C. Princes drive out foreign rulers and expand the Egyptian Empire into Asia and Africa. It's golden age begins. The capital is again in Memphis. The powerful rulers of this period are Hatshepsut, Amenhotep III and Tiy, Akhenaton and Nefertiti, Tutankhamen and Ankhesenamen. Great temples are built throughout the country, particularly at Thebes (at Luxor and Karnak). Royalty is buried in the valley of the kings. Third Intermediate Period (Post Empire) 1085-663 B.C. The kings weaken, and Egypt is no longer a world power. Civil War and foreign invaders tear Egypt apart. The Saite Period 663-525 B.C. People from other countries including the Greeks, settle in Egypt. The Persian Conquest 525-405 B.C. The Persian invade and rule Egypt from the period 525-404 B.C., when they are pushed out. Alexander The Great conquers Egypt 332 B.C. Ptolemaic Period 323-30 B.C. When Alexander the Great dies, General Ptolemy takes the title of king and forms the dynasty of the Ptolemies. In the third century B.C., Alexandria becomes the capital and the Home of the greatest library of the ancient world. In 37 B.C. Queen Cleopatra VII of the Ptolemies marries Mark Anthony, a co-ruler of Rome. In the battle of Actiun, they lose to Octavian, another co-ruler of Rome. Cleopatra and Anthony commit suicide in 30 B.C. and Egypt becomes part of the Roman Empire. 2000 years will pass before next native-Egyptian will rule the land. |
