What does epilepsy mean? It comes from the Greek meaning to hold or size. People with epilepsy have seizures once in a while or every day. While having a seizure, your brain cells fire uncontrollably at up to four times their normal rate, temporarily affecting a way the person acts, moves, thinks, and feels. Many conditions can affect the brain and trigger epilepsy, including:

Brain injury, either before or after birth

Brain tumors

Infections, especially meningitis and encephalitis

Genetic conditions, including tuberous sclerosis

Structural abnormalities in the brain’s blood vessels

Lead poisoning
