NFL (National Football League) games are very popular. During the late summer through fall and into January is when it's played. Four exhibition games are played at the beginning of the year, followed by sixteen games and then there are the playoffs games. Teams play one game each week. Between each game they have time to practice for their next game. During the season many teams receive one week with no game which we call a bye.

Players, owners, advertisers, and other people involved in football have a big NFL business. Teams have agreed to stay playing for certain cities with the promise of football facilities provided by the host cities. For three years in the 1980's, the United States Football League (USFL) which was new at that time competed against the NFL league for players. However, NFL lost some of their players to USFL. So in order to get them not to leave cities, they had to pay them more money.
