Kicker/Punter

Kickers take care of kickoffs, field goal attempts, and extra point attempts. They come on the field when the offense can't make a first down, and the offense punts the ball away or tries for a field goal. The kickers also come on after most touchdowns to try an extra point kick. Most of the time the kickers just have to kick the ball and are rarely asked to make tackles or run with the ball or pass it. Special teams can be divided up into change of possession plays for points. It may look like the players don't really know where they're going, but the change of possession plays are actually very planned out by both the offense and defense. If the offense doesn't make a first down after three plays, the punter may come in and punt the ball to the other team. If the kicker needs someone to hold the ball, the back up quarterback is usually the man for the job. This person is called the holder.
