![]() King Kamehameha I was born in1753 in Kohala. When Kamehameha I was born a priest had told his mother that he would be a powerful ruler. His mother had to hide him and he lived with his uncle. As Kamehameha I got older, what the kahuna had told his mother started to happen. He learned how to be a chief. King Kamehameha was given a conch shell wich brought good luck when blown. King Kamehameha hoped that the conch shell would bring him success. Before King Kamehameha had become ruler an old man had chanted and told of the rise of a ruler over all the islands. Also he chanted that there would be peace of the golden age of all Hawaiian Islands, and the people would keep the ruler in their heart. King Kamehameha wanted to unite the islands so he gathered the largest number of war canoes and warriors and set out to capture the islands. He started by taking over Maui first. After that, he went to Molokai and Lanai. Next he had set out for Oahu. The warriors of Oahu were ready but lost the fight against Kamehameha`s warriors. He now ruled all of the islands except Kauai and Ni`Ihau. These islands were given to King Kamehameha by the rulers of the islands without a fight. The chant of the kahuna at his birth came true. King Kamehameha I married Kaahumanu and died in 1819. Where he was buried was kept a secret. His home in Kohala was called Kanakahonu RESOURCES
