Monarchs were Kings and Queens of Hawaii. They lived in their own palaces. At first, they used to live in villages and they got served by other Hawaiians.

King David Kalakaua began making the Iolani Palace in 1879. He was finished and done building the Iolani Palace in 1882. King David Kalakaua used the name Iolani because it was the meaning of "Bird of Heaven". The first Monarchy who lived in the Iolani Palace was King Kalakaua and Queen Lili' uokalani. Hawaii's only royal residence, Iolani Palace, served also as the legislature. It also served as the govermental building of the Repulicans of Hawaii. Once monarchys and noble prople strolled the walkways of the Iolani Palace to watch the sunset.

Monarchs of Hawaii made Hawaiian people pay taxes really different then we do now. The Monarchys of Hawaii made Hawaiians pay taxes by making them give them food on special occansion or festival like the Makahiki.

Iolani Palace was not to serve Hawaiian Royalty very long. Eleven years later, the Hawaiian Monarchy was overthrown from the Iolani Palace. Bodygaurds took King David Kalakaua out of the Iolani Palace. They took Quen Lili' uoklalani and made her a prisoner up in the attic of the Iolani Palace.
