*1763-1771*
After the French and Indian War, the 13 original colonies were greatly in debt. They needed to pay back the King for all of the land, and products that he lost during the war. The King thought that a quick and easy way to get his money collected was to establish taxes. In 1765 a Stamp Act was enacted. It imposed taxes on all legal documents (i.e. marriage licenses, newspapers, and 47 other documents). Not only did these taxes hurt their pocketbooks, but they were highly visible (i.e. they were needed for every day transactions). In addition, to enforce the actions, the British announced that colonial offenders were to be tried in the hated Admiralty courts.
Thus then then the Colonist responded with vocal protests., thier favorite cry was " No Taxation without Reperentation" Many colonist boyccotted many of the taxed products, and Respected men in the town formed support groups, One of them imperticilar was the Sons Of Liberty, with John Adams as the leader. Soon later, even with the poor response of the first tax, a new tax was created. The Townshed Acts . In addition, the New York legislature was suspended until it agreed to quarter British soldiers. The Colonist acted worse than before, they had led rallys, and loud protests.. Since the king heard of these rallies, and protests, and did not permit them, he sent over soldiers, numbering four thousand, to keep hold on the colonists. Day to day contact between soldiers and colonists was expected, many soldiers were pushy and violated colonists.
