In A.D 62 there were many earthquakes. Statues fell, columns were broken and buildings collapsed. Right after that Mt. Vesuvius rumbled. However, the people did not believe they were in any kind of danger. In the summer of A.D 79,Vesuvius erupted violently. It killed hundreds of people because they either suffacated in ash, mud or steaming gases. Streams of lava and mud poured into Pomeii. It filled the town and harbor with hot ashes. The volcano continued to spew ash for eight days.
Researchers began to dig up the city on April 1, 1703. They discovered murals, mosaics, skeletons and statues. Most of the Pompeii site has now been uncovered and most of the best mosaics and murals have been sent to the archeological museums in Naples. The house of the Vettii, one of the best preserved houses in Pompeii, belonged to a villa merchant. It holds some murals with Hercules and Zeus.
They used clay, paint, calcite and sand to create their murals. It took them up to one year to make a single mural. Click here to see the directions for making a mural back in Pompeii.
