Some pirates bought their own ships. Most of the time the
pirates took ships that belonged to someone else. They would find
a merchant ship out at sea and attack it. Sometimes if they fought
and beat the crew of a merchant ship they would just take everything and
let the ship and the people on it go free. Other times they might
take some of the people and sell them or make them work in the pirate
towns.

Pirates Attacking a Merchant Ship

This is the hold of a large ship. It is called the hold because
it "holds" all of the belongings and supplies that are on the
ship. Pirates stored their treasure in the hold of their ships.

Ship's Hold |

The biggest and heaviest things were placed in the very bottom of the
ship's hold. This helped the ship stay upright in the water and
made it easier to steer. Most of the space on a ship was taken up
by the hold. There was very little room for places to sleep and
rest on board a ship.
