How To Create an Illusion like our Front Page

What makes this illusion work
In this picture, light comes from above. Because raised objects cast shadows at their bottom edges, and impressions cast shadows on their top edges, when the picture is upside down, the position of the shadows is reversed. Your brain is tricked into seeing the impressions as raised objects.

Step 1 Gather these objects

  • A wooden roller
  • A checker piece
  • A lego piece
  • A button
  • A fork
  • A chess piece
  • A mini tree
  • A screw
  • A die or dice
  • A plastic bone
  • White play-doh
  • A bright colored piece of paper

Step 2

Put the play-doh in the center of the Paper and squash it! If it helps, use the wooden roller.

Step 3

Put the objects on the play-doh but don't push them in yet. This will be just to arrange them. Okay, now you can push them in (be careful not to go through).

Step 4

Take a picture from above in a room with bright lights. When the picture is developed or is spit out, turn it upside-down and the objects should pop out at you
