London, England

Introduction

London, with a population of 6,378,600 people, is the capital of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland.  London is the biggest city in the United Kingdom, and also one of the biggest cities in the world.   Many tourists visit London each year, perhaps because of the remarkable sites to see.

Sites

The British Museum is one of the most famous sites.  Inside it includes some of the greatest relics of humankind.  The Rosetta Stone, the Elgin Marbles, and Sutton Hoo Treasure are some of them.  Another place to visit is Buckingham Palace.  It is chief among the symbols of London.  One of London's best free shows, Changing of the Guard, remains in front of the Palace.  Buckingham Palace is the official London residence of the Queen.  St. Paul's Cathedral is yet another place to visit in London.  It is the symbolic heart of London.  It will absolutely take your breath away. It was completed by Sir Christopher Wren in 1710 after 35 years of building.  It was mostly spared by bombs of World War II.  To see the facade and dome at its best after you have seen it during the daytime, go see it at night.

Climate

A good thing about visiting each of these places is London's mild temperature. The average January temperature is 42 degrees and the average July temperature is 65 degrees. It doesn't get too cold in the winter or too hot in the summer.

Religion

Many people of London are members of the Church of England or other Protestant churches.  Other religions include Islam, Judaism, and Roman Catholicism.

Shopping

Many Londoners enjoy shopping during the day.  Napoleon once called Britain a nation of shopkeepers.  He must have known what he was talking about. No matter what you are shopping for, fun or fashion, you will most likely find it in London.

Sports

Soccer, called football by Londoners, is also popular in London.  It has 13 professional teams.  Rugby and cricket are popular sports, too.  Other sports enjoyed by Londoners are dog racing, golf, horse racing, swimming, and tennis.

Economy

London has a good role in manufacturing also.  The leading industries are printing and publishing, manufacturing of clothing and textiles, electrical and electronic products, food products, and pharmaceuticals.

Currency

It you think that one American dollar isn't worth very much, it equals 0.67 British Pound.  However, the currency conversions change all the time.  One American dollar equaled 0.67 British Pound on January 1, 2001 at 8.46 a.m., but might not be the same very long.

Conclusion

Visiting London would be a great vacation. It is easy to get to by plane, there is no language barrier, and there are so many absolutely, wonderful sites to visit in London and many surrounding cities.
