Cairo is the capital of Egypt. It is the most populated city in Africa. Cairo is located in the Nile Valley at the southern edge of the Nile Delta. This is one of the only places in Egypt with plenty of water and fertile soil. The people of Egypt are Cairenes. Many people are poor, employed in factories or small shops. Most middle class and the wealthy live in Garden City, on the islands, or in the suburbs. Most of the 6,800,000 people are Arab or Muslim. The ancient city of Memphis was once near what is now Cairo. It was founded around 3100 BC. Many of Egypt's treasures were discovered in the early 1800ís. These treasure exhibits and lectures attracted people in western countries. Europeans settled in Cairo during the 1800ís. The people of Cairo have worked hard to modernize their city since the government changed to a republic in 1953. Cairo's culture includes many backgrounds. One culture group consists of the Arabs. Some of these people wear long, flowing robes while most dress like Europeans and Americans. Cairo is an important industrial center. Some of the manufactured products are textiles, handicrafts, works in gold, silver, and bronze. The city serves as a distributing center for a wide range of manufactured goods imported from Europe and North America. Cairo is one of the most pleasant points in Egypt with fertile soil and plenty of water. The culture of the city consists of many different people.
