Beijing, China

Beijing is the biggest city in China. It is also the heaviest populated. It is a wonderful place to visit.

People

The Han are the largest ethnic group in the country. Most of Beijing's people belong to it. Northern Chinese, or Mandarin, is the official language. Most of Beijing's children go to secondary school, then go to elementary school, and so on. Beijing has a lot of major universities. It has the largest national library in the world! Some major sports are bowling, track, and field.

Economy

After Communists took over they built many factories. Some factories produce chemicals, electronic equipment, farm machinery, iron, steel, and textiles. Coal mines in Beijing provide some steel.

The City

The old city is constructed of two parts. The outer and inner cities. Within the inner city is there is the Forbidden city and the Imperial city. At the southern part of the Imperial city is the gate of heavenly peace. Most of Beijing's outer city is commercial areas, residential areas, and park areas. Just north of Beijing runs part of the Great Wall of China.

Travel Tips

The Beijing Capital Airport is 25 km(16 miles) northeast from city center. It is about 17 to 20 hours from Chicago. It is also about 13 hours from Los Angeles.

Government

The Hebei Province is where Beijing lies. It's government is independent of the provincial government.

History

The city of Beijing was first founded as a trading center about 2000 B.C. It used to be the capital of the small state of Yen. In 1989 big groups of people wanted more democracy, but they never received it.
