Every Day Life

Many streets and market places in Egypt today look like they did in ancient times.

What was Egyptian life like?

Egyptians did indeed have families like ours, but they were larger. Usually the boys married young at about 14, girls married around 12. They would have lots of children. Who would they marry? Not just anyone, but they would sometimes marry their relatives. They would live to be about 40 years old. The children had lots of games to play. Some games were leapfrog, and statue. They also had a few toys. They had dolls, boys and girls both played with dolls, they also had balls and tops.

Did the Egyptians eat well?

The Egyptians ate well, yes. At banquets they ate so much, they sometimes made themselves sick! The poor even had good diets of vegetables, bread, and fruit. They got their fish from the Nile. They roasted and stewed the meat with herbs, spices, and olive oil from Syria. On very hot days and when the sun was hot, they laid duck and fish out to dry. The fish was usually salted. The Egyptians often added sand to the flour to help grind it up. That would leave you with a toothache! The teeth of the Egyptians were often ground down by the sand in their food. Egypt's national drink is beer.
