Why The Cherokee Fought Wars

In the early days when it came time to join war the decision wasn't just made by the men, it was made by the women also. One reason they would choose to go to war was to get revenge. They wanted revenge if one of their men was killed by an outsider.

If the person that was killed had been murdered, revenge was necessary. They believed that after a person was killed, his spirit was sent to a land called the Darkening Land. Once there, the person would not rest until his murderer had also been murdered.

Cherokee women also joined war, but very few. Their job was to cook and carry firewood.
