One of the hardest times in the Cherokees' short history would be the Trail of Tears. Men, women, and children were forced from their homes, and off their land to "Indian Territory." Gold was found on their land, so the government thought the land was too rich for them to live on. They received minimum amounts of food and facilities. Commanded by soldiers they had to march over thousands of miles to their new land, which at the time was unknown to them. No matter who pleaded, the government would not give in. That was how the Trail of Tears was started. 17,000 Cherokees were on the Trail of Tears, and 4,000 died on the way. The Trail of Tears was translated by the Cherokees which means "The Trail where they cried." ("Nunna daul Tsuny").
