The Green Corn Ceremony

The Green Corn Ceremony was the most important rite every year. It was also called Busk, the Muskogean word "baskita" which means "to fast." It was celebrated in late summer when corn ripened.

Preparing for the ceremony was usually the same, but rituals varied. Some things that were done to get ready were cleaning the houses and public buildings. Following a feast, a period of fasting was held in the town square. After that, every household fire was extinguished, and the high priest made a new fire in each home. Finally, the town elders were lead by the high priest in a traditional dance around a sacred fire. The community was made pure and past errors were forgiven.
