Pet Math

Would you believe there is a lot of math involved in caring for a pet? We have come up with some math problems for you. The information in these problems is based on our current research. Some of the facts may amaze you. ANSWERS

  1. The average cat owner in the United States spends $220 per year for cat care. The dog owner spends $300 per year, and fish owners and bird owners spend $35 and $60 per year respectively. How much money would the average pet owner spend in a year if they own 3 cats, a dog and a bird?
  2. Each year 8 to 12 million animals are sent to American animal shelters. Of these 30 to 60 % of these animals are euthanized. If these figures are correct, what is the least number of animals euthanized in a year?
  3. According to the American Pet Products Manufacturing Association there are 66.2 million cats and 58 million dogs in the United States. If there is an average of 2.1 cats per household, how many cat owning households are there?
  4. According to the American Humane Society a single pair of cats and their offspring can be responsible for producing 420,000 cats in seven years. At this rate how many cats could two pairs of cats produce? We will assume that no cats from one group can reproduce with cats from another group.
  5. If a classic golden hamster weighs 6 ounces and is 3 inches long. What is the average weight per inch of the hamster?
  6. 6. If 40% of all mammals are rodents, and there are 3,000,000 animals in a large city, how many of them are rodents?
