Dogs

There are many different types of dogs. Some are more active than others, but they all require care and training. All dogs, no matter what type, are relatives of their canine friends.

Choosing a dog- There are two types of dogs, sporting and non-sporting dogs. If you just want another friend, then a non-sporting dog should be just right for you. These dogs are good companions. The poodle is one of the most common non-sporting dogs. The bulldog, which comes from a long line of fighters, is not a good choice if you have little kids around the house.

If you like to hunt, a sporting dog would be great for you. Sporting dogs help track down and retrieve small game. When the dog finds the pray, it will stand at point. It stands as still as possible with it's nose pointed toward the game until the hunter is in range of the game. Some dogs sit instead of point. Some dogs even herd sheep, like sheep dogs.

Taking a puppy home- A puppy needs to be at least two months old before you take him home. Sometime between two and six months old is ideal. When you pick up a puppy, don't let it dangle, it will frighten and hurt the puppy. How to pick a puppy up is very simple. First you need to put one hand under the dog to support it firmly. Then you can use the other hand to pet and comfort the puppy. Instead of squeezing the puppy, be very gentle. When you need to talk to the puppy about anything, make sure you talk in low tone of voice, because it is the tone of your voice that will be reassuring.

Housebreaking- You should housebreak your pet as soon as you get it home. A way to train your puppy is to confine the puppy in a small area in the house. The area should only be big enough for his/her bed. This will make the puppy wait as long as possible to use the bathroom or move his or her bowels.

Exercise- Exercise is important. Obesity is a major problem for some breeds. You should walk your dog first thing in the morning, after your dog wakes up from a nap, and about 20 minutes after each of your dog's meals. A nighttime walk is also good. When you take your dog out for a walk, make sure you have a leash on your dog so it won't bite people and so you can keep it from running out in the middle of the road.

Being a responsible pet owner- You should make sure that your dog doesn't disturb other people with loud barks or howls. Also, if you don't want puppies, try to prevent your dogs from having them. If you don't, this will cause strays.
