The Salem Witch Trials

The Salem Witch Trials occured 1692-1693. During this time, over 20 people were killed in Salem, Massechusetts. For the most part the people killed were women. Some of the people that were killed were Sarah Good, a homeless woman who begged from door to door, Ann Foster, Rebecca Nurse, a seventy year old woman, George Burroughs, a father of five and one of the only men to be accused. One man, Giles Corey, was pressed to death, by heavy bolders. The Salem Witch trials were started for many reasons. Some of these reasons were based on land and money enheritance, boredom, secrets, fear, and hatred. In 1692 there was a group of teenage girls who would gather at Abagail and Betsy Paris' house. The Parrises had a slave named Tituba, who was from the West Indies. The girls would listen to stories told by Tituba, sing and dance to strange songs, and gossip. The group of girls had to keep these meetings a secret because witchcraft, or anything like it, was strictly forbidden.
