| What is coastal erosion | Where is it happening | What can we do to help |

Just imagine a trip to your favorite beach. Sun, sand, and surf; you can hardly wait to get out the suntan lotion! Hey, something looks different though. The beach is smaller. Where did all the sand go? And look at all the condos. You can hardly see the beach for all the buildings! Where did all the animals go? You don't see any wildlife through your binoculars. What’s going on? What has happened to your beach?!
Your beach has experienced coastal erosion, a natural process that affects all shorelines. The action of water through waves breaking on the shore, has caused land sediment to break down into tiny particles of sand and wash away. Problems may occur when people interfere in this natural process. This web site will discuss the problems and solutions.
The photos above show the effects of coastal erosion at Fountainebleau State Park in Mandeville, Louisiana.
