Cape Crafts

SCALLOP OVER THE COUNTER LIGHTS

MATERIALS:

20 scallop shells  (ours were courtesy of the West Dennis sea gulls)

One glue gun with glue sticks

10 light set (available at craft stores)

2 size C batteries

PROCEDURE:

Clean shells (Make sure you remove any salt water. The best method is to make a solution of equal parts warm water and bleach.)

Match up shells

Place matching shells over individual lights

Glue together (with adult supervision)

  STEP 1.

(picture 1)

After collecting 24 same shaped scallop shells, we soaked them in the bleach mixture for about 24 hours and then re-soaked them in dishwashing detergent (we soaked ours for approximately 20 minutes).

  STEP 2.

Scrub the shells using a coarse bristle brush to remove any sand or other beach debris.

  STEP 3.

(pictures 3,4)

Dry off the shells. (We let ours dry overnight on the window sill in our classroom.)

  STEP 4.

(pictures 5,6,7)

Select 20 shells that match each other in size, as if they are closed shells.

STEP 5.

(picture 8)

After matching up all of your shells begin to glue them together.( with adult supervision of course). Start by gluing the bottoms, and then in spots along the edge of the shells.

STEP 6.

(pictures 9, 10)

Before the glue dries, place your light into the middle of the shell. Make sure that the shells will close together. Hold the shells together for about 2 minutes until the glue hardens.

STEP 7.

(picture 11)

Let your lights completely dry and set overnight before using them. These lights are used many places on the Cape Cod, particularly during the Christmas season. You see them over fireplaces, window sills and mixed with greens around the doors of historic Route 6A. They are reminiscent our our heritage and an earlier historical period.
