Hunting

Dolphins hunt their food in a variety of ways.  One way is a group of dolphins herd a school of fish in to a tightly packed group so it is easier to attack and to get food.  Another way they hunt is echolocation.  Echolocation is a series of clicks that acts as a sonar.  This sonar can detect even the smallest organisms in the water.

THE HUNT IS ON

FOOD

Most dolphins like fish and squid, but they are known to eat a variety of other things such as octopus and crustaceans. The Ganges River Dolphin even eats birds!

TEETH

Did you know that dolphins don't use their teeth for eating food? Instead dolphins teeth are built to catch and hold slippery fish that are small enough to swallow whole. Most dolphins have cone-shaped teeth. Some other dolphins have sharp, curved teeth. Dolphins get only one pair of teeth unlike people. So, if a tooth is lost or worn out, a new tooth will not grow in its place. Most dolphins have between 100 and 160 teeth.

FEEDING BEHAVIOR

Dolphins hunt in packs and by using echolocation to locate their food.
