Although Salyut1 was small, with a mass of about 41,580 lbs. (18,900 kg), it was the heaviest payload to date. It looked something like four cylinders joined in a line. At opposite ends were pairs of solar panels that streched out like wings to a combined distance of 33 ft (11 m) each.

The worlds first space station was divided into 3 inside compartments. Two of those compartments were living spaces for the cosmonauts, who would arrive a few days later. The first was the transfer/docking module which was connected to the second, larger living module. The third was the unpressurized instrument and rocket propulsion module.

On October 11,1971 Salyut 1 reentered the atmosphere and was destroyed.
