Donald "Deke" Slayton was born on March 1, 1924. Slayton was one of the original seven Mercury missions, but he wasn't able to go to space, because of a heart problem. He got a chance to fly on the ASTP (Apollo-Soyuz Test Project) flight, July 15-24, 1975. The ASTP was a space link-up between the U.S. and the Soviet Union, he and two other astronauts docked with a Soviet Soyuz with two cosmonauts aboard. They shared quarters for two days with the cosmonauts. On his way back, the Apollo spacecraft accidentally filled with toxic exhaust gas. Slayton's lungs were extremely burned. He and the other astronauts nearly lost their lives. Slayton was once again grounded when a small tumor was found in one of his lungs. However it was unrelated to the accident. The ASTP flight was Slayton's only mission, but he logged almost nine days in space. Slayton resigned from NASA in 1981.
