Atlantis

Atlantis was named after a research vessel  for the woods Hole Oceanographic Institute in Massachusetts. Atlantis was the first U.S. ship used for oceanographic research.

The construction for orbiter Atlantis was started on March 3, 1980, Atlantis was completed  on April 10, 1984. Once the main engines were installed Atlantis weighed 171,000 pounds. Atlantis was shipped to California for 20 months to go through many modifications. Atlantis' first flight took place on October 3,1985. Nasa had added another orbiter to it's fleet.
