Apollo 13 was launched on April 11 , 1970. Apollo 13 was to be the third manned lunar mission it's crew included James Lovell jr., John Swigert, and Fred Haise jr.

Everything was going well until one of the service module's oxygen tank became ruptured and exploded. Apollo 13 lost its normal supply of electricity, light and water and soon began losing oxygen.  boat.

Because they were losing oxygen quickly and they were 200,000 miles from Earth Apollo 13's crew was thinking about using the lunar module as a lifeboat to back to earth. It turns out the astronauts had to transfer the command modules guidance system to the Lunar Module in order to get back to Earth. The astronauts did in fact have to use the lunar module to return home.

Apollo 13 finally returned home on April 17, 1970. The mission was considered a failure but thankfully no lives were lost.
