On May 5, 1961  Mercury 3 was launched. Freedom’s one and only astronaut was Alan B. Shepard Jr. After many delays at the launch pad, Mercury 3 finally launched at 9:34am. Alan Shepard was traveling at a velocity of 5,134 miles per hour.

The objective of this mission was to determine man’s capabilities in a space environment. Many problems such as vehicle control during insertion, behavior of space systems, and many more occurred. Despite the many problems, Shepard proved to make the mission a success.  Freedom 7 splashed down on May 5, 1961 with a total mission duration of 15 minutes and 28 seconds.
